Will the next-generation Nissan LEAF offer two times the driving range as the current model? That's the recent rumor circulating around the car industry. According to various automotive publications, the news came from Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn himself during a recent Japanese TV appearance. The increase in range is said to be achievable thanks to newly developed batteries for the popular electric vehicle.

The brand-new range currently being predicted for the Nissan LEAF is 249 miles. However, this number could be based on Japanese efficiency ratings which differ from U.S. ratings. In North America, the LEAF currently features an EPA-estimated 84-mile driving range. If reports about the next model having double the range are true, this could mean the U.S. LEAF will average around 168 miles. Information about the all-new batteries that would back this outstanding range is virtually non-existent at this time. There are no details on whether or not it will be a battery pack that has two times the capacity as the current pack or if the power will come in a completely different form.

In the meantime, while we wait for Nissan to comment on the future of the LEAF, we'll continue to enjoy the current 2015 Nissan LEAF model. If you're interested in checking out the EV for yourself, stop by Trophy Nissan and take one for a test drive!
