Japanese Drift Champion Masato Kawabata recently helped Nissan set a brand-new record for the fastest drift ever using a modified 2016 GT-R. The incredible feat took place during a special event held at Fujairah International Airport located in the United Arab Emirates.

It takes a special car to set a Guinness World Record, so it’s no surprise the legendary Nissan GT-R was up for the task. Specially-tuned by GReddy Trust, the 2016 example was modified to churn out 1380 horsepower and send all power to the rear wheels. Prior to the stunt, Kawabata tested the car at Japan’s Fuji Speedway to ensure it was ready to take on the challenge. On the day of the event, the pro drifter was ready to burn rubber and pushed the GT-R past 300km/h to break the record, nabbing it from Jakub Pryzgo?ski of Poland.

"Once again, Nissan has broken a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title and has made international history for the fifth time in the Middle East," said Samir Cherfan, Managing Director of Nissan Middle East. "The Nissan GT-R is one of the world’s most iconic supercars, proving time and again the incredible breadth of its capabilities, and has clearly demonstrated its performance leadership by beating the best drift cars out there. The fact that this achievement was set here in the UAE makes it even more special for our region. Setting this incredibly difficult world record was a clear demonstration of the excitement we are bringing to the Middle East with the Nismo brand."
